New and Improved

New Yorkers can finally hold their heads high. Mayor Bloomberg and his developer cronies have done us another favor, replacing those ugly old green monsters that used to sell magazines and gum with these beautiful new and improved Newsstands Moderne! Look at that chrome, that lovely smoked glass (corner of 7th and Christopher across from the venerable Village Cigars). It doesn't look like it holds as many actual magazines as the old green monster, not to mention its flimsy looking construction, but hey, that's progress! What's next, chrome port-a-potties? We can only hope.

Hard to believe they will stay clean...or functional.

Modern progress; look where it has taken us. Looks like there will be problems with the rolltop door.

I think these are much nicer looking, but I wonder if the money would be better spent helping people.

Yes, all shiny and new, modern and sleek! But I still like the old ones too. They have a certain obsolete charm.

After looking at Elianes photo, I must say I agree with you ken mac. The new looks much better.

Actually I prefer the old ones. I guess my sarcasm isn't obvious enough!

Oh Lordy, don't let Mayor Blumberg and his cronies get their hands on that lovely library below. They will have it demo'd and some glitzy monstrosity on its site in no time.

Egad. What were they thinking!?!?!?

YIKES!! About as charming as finding gum under your table. Who the heck designed this soup can?
(Sorry). Betty.

Just saw Elain's old newstand photo. If I could come to NY, this is one of the things I would definately want to experience. I love the old green stands. Betty.
