This beautiful Mahoney built diner sits abandoned on West Side Highway near Houston Street. Its last official business name was RIB, and back then, in the late 90s, it served good burgers and brews. Before that it was a semi chic wannabe Mexican place, before that who knows. But what is remarkable, is that even though abandoned and now vandalized, the diner retains its chrome loveliness. It still shines, its colors are rich, and the thing is as solid as a rock. They knew how to build back in the 50s!

Gorgeous building. What a shame that it's gone to seed. It could and should be saved somehow. What a classic!
I agree, what a wonderful piece of architecture.
Just lovely!
The fifties. The days of steel and chrome. Good find.
Beautiful! Looks like the perfect home for me. The *Zagat rated* cracks me up.
Totally agree with you. To me this is 50's America through, my second hand film knowledge. Great structure, and great pic and even better words.
It's a lovely building. I hope that someone can restore it someday. What a waste.
Let's hope it finds a new use sometime.
Let's all pitch in and reopen the place! I say we call it "Hilda's"
I rarely venture that far out to the west side.
Some in NJ should tow that thing across the river to give it a lease in life as a diner.
i just hope they don't turn that block into yet another wonderous high rise!
Hahaha! After I get this dang office done, I think that diner's going to be a breeze! ;)
This is a stunner, Ken. I hope that NY Monuments Dpt has the wit to "list" it and slap on a preservation order. If I were an "American" I'd buy it and ship it across to England (if you understand me!! ;-))
You really oughtta pop in there, grab some snaps, and show us what the inside looks like! ;)
