Jersey City 1990, Vanished

"Havemeyer's Deli was opened by George and Alma Havemeyer on Central Ave in Jsersey City. Later it was run by their son George and his wife Vera. Everything was made on premises from the Rice Pudding and Bread Puddings to the Fish Cakes on Fridays. The crumb cake and other bakery items were brought in on a daily basis from Shoning's Bakery in Jersey City... how do I know this? George and Alma were my Oma and Opa!" from Google

Love this. As an American away from home, your last few shots have put me in a very nostalgic mood. Something quintessentially American about them.

Makes me miss living in Maryland where bagels and delis were a more prominent feature.

A good and interesting story behind this bakery !

Yeah, what's WRONG with that look for a grocery/deli? Am I dating myself? Isn't there something more real about it than its ilk in today's strip malls?

Those Oma and Opa had immigrated from the Netherlands I suppose. Looks like a nice shop to get some fine delicatessen.

I just love these kind of places. Mom & pop! I trust the service and food alot more than these giant places. more charm too!

How can something from 1990 be gone? I mean, was it really that long ago?

These old photos are really great.
I've heard of Havemeyers. It was pretty well known, no?

I like the variey of food on offer. Rice and Bread puddings and fish cakes. Sounds very British to me.

Brilliant photo and text. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and I really mean that because you've given me something else to think about, to ponder over, for a little while. You must have jillions of tales to tell about being there with your family.

My 'Oma and Opa'... do you have Dutch roots? :)

Many changes have come to Jersey City. I hope you still can get this kind of food.

What a great building! I certainly would have photographed it if I'd come across it.

I grew up going to Havemeyer's deli & went there when my kids were young. We lived on Cambridge Ave. I sure miss those fishcakes and potato salad, which is what I was craving & why looked up the name. I miss all of Central Avenue the way it used to be. I wish I had the recipe for those fishcakes. Nothing can compare.
