While much of the East Village is quickly being overrun by gentrification, not everyone is going that quietly... I would have taken some interior shots but I value a scar free face....
Reminds me of the kind of bars I went to in the early 80's. $3 cover charge and all the punk rock you could handle or a riot whichever came first. I can imagine what the restrooms look like.
In my youth I would have dived straight in and felt right at home. My inner rock chick now has a quieter life. My downtown is so squeaky clean, which is not great for a photograper. I envy you these time capsules.
wow ... i went to a birthday party for a 2 year old at that bar, back in 1987. it was all quite respectable - the mom knew the owner/manager/something? and didn't have room at her place, so they ler her use the bar. no regular patrons, middle of the day.
it wasn't quite a scary looking back then, or my perspective has altered more than i know.

What exactly goes on in that place?

Oh, good grief! You are wise, I think, to remove yourself from the vicinity of this ... ?
I'll just stay here at Harry Hope's and leave that place to the kids and THEIR pipe dreams.
for some reason, everything about this made me laugh, including your captions. Do not go gently...
Very interesting.....don't think I would have gone in either.
Just walked by there--looks the same although the devil artwork is no longer there. No I would not go in either.I don't go to bars...
ET must have gotten drunk and started worshiping the devil.
your right Ken, that is a funny comment!
Thanks for the great photos, as always.
Wise decision! - Dave
love this place. was actually there over the weekend. didn't see the old school b&w tv that once sat in the corner window.
Filth, graffiti, upside down pentagrams, and what offends my eye the most? The apostrophe.
Now see, I saw Mars bar and my mind went straight to chocolate. Then...I saw the rest of the picture, whoa.
Gives the impression of differences. Color choices are different. Wanted to look different.
