Bleecker Bobs = Starbucks

Bleecker Bob's is one of the oldest record stores in New York City dating from 1968. But Bob's is going down, due to a rent hike or perhaps just bad business (even while most vinyl LP stores are thriving). And as reported here first, Bob's is becoming yet another STARBUCKS. A story in the NY Times confirmed it today.

Bleecker Bob's was the Night Owl, a club as famous as the Gaslight or Village Gate, in its way. The Lovin' Spoonful, Fred Neil, Tim Hardin and many other talents sprouted from that place. All we can do is boycott places like Strabuck's that disembowel our neighborhood.

So sad that those shops have to close. First it was Mac Donald and now it is Starbucks that takes over the poor shops.

Love the "New Wave" bin and the two neon clocks.

Sad news. Was the first job I had when I first moved to NYC. Gave me the job on the spot with no questions asked, no application. Probably spent more than I earned!

This is like watching the house you grew up in being torn down. Change is constant and life goes on but this really sucks!

I worked at another record store in NYC, but we did our own shopping at Bleecker Bob's. An electric place; I remember hearing Public Image's single there right when it came in the store.

not sure who this reporter spoke to since he doesn't mention anyone by name, but Bleecker Bob's is currently looking at spaces in the east village. we are definitely NOT planning to close.

please email us at bleeckerbobs@yahoo.com with any leads on storefront.
thanks and stay tuned.

Sad news. We have a number of vinyl stores in Vancouver that are holding their own but used book stores are having a harder time of it.

the Times followed up and confirmed it:

I hope he makes it in his new location! Love the photo.

What a wonderful place; a real collectors' gem.

I hope Bob prospers in his new place. The UK is stuffed full of 'clone' shops. We badly need the indies to add, colour, service and bring knowledge to our streets.

An excellent choice of photograph subject.

It is a beautifully wistful shot. I can still remember my very first album I ever bought, "Meet the Beatles" and I saved my pennies to get it!

Oh! I bet there are gems buried here. Hours on hours, I'd get lost. They might find me on a milk carton. hahahaha
