Once a small chain of family owned NYC drug stores, this tiny store in the East Village is all that remains...and a beauty no CVS or Rite Aid can rival.
Growing up in England they were always called "Pharmacies" or "Chemists". Presumably pharmaceuticals and chemicals=good and drugs=bad. So it's in-built in me to have a chuckle when I see DRUGS advertised in big neon letters
Americans are good at calling a spade a spade and dispensing (pardon the pun) with all that nonsense.
My favorite kind of corner store. I'm probably repeating myself but on my 1st but not last trip to NYC last yr Oct, we ended up at the Canal Room. It was terrible & there was no food. We walked across the street to a similar looking store but it was a conveniance store with two nicest (one was a tall young Lebanese) guys working there (they make sandwiches and breakfast any time). thanks for the reminding me of that.

Hey Ken...I have to get out there and find me some neon. I love it!
Awesome pics... got really nice feel to them!
Great photos, Ken Mac! Fantastic red color!
So true. I vividly remember the drug stores that used to be in my neighborhood. There is one left.
I love how the sign lights up in red.
beautiful work, Ken.
Great photos, even if the world of the drugstore remains a complete mystery to me!
Great ones--Sorry I missed you in my part of town.
These are beautiful. You are so right about their beauty.
I miss these old-timey drugstores...nothing as sterile as a Walgreens or CVS!
Nice...this is one of my favorite neon storefronts.
And, you can't beat 'Blo Drugs' lol.
All that great neon, wow!
The neon sign addict in me loves these photos! Great store too.

Ok, what are "cut rate cosmetics?" Just doesn't sound wholesome. I'll skimp on many things -- laundry detergent, aspirin, but not mascara.
and thus series is outstanding
and rox.
:-)
so envious of your commitment.
we really have to get out there
more.
keep on bloggin', brother.

Another memory triggered, there was a Block Drug on B'way near us .. there are no Love, CVS or chains in Manhattan other than DUANE READE!
I'm a little late to this one, but - love that neon!
Great shots. Thanks for documenting a vanishing species.
