This 150 year old landmarked building  at 488 Greenwich is surrounded by blue glass towers and gentrification in action, but for years Joanne Hendricks has sold "books about food and wine, etc," from her store, and she owns the building, a must in retaining unique businesses such as hers. Minetta Tavern -- A Look Back

Now that Minetta Tavern has reopened to rave reviews, I thought it would be fun to revisit the old Tavern interior, circa '07, pre renovation.  The prohibition era restaurant/bar has the virtual history of Greenwich Village written on its faded walls, with murals depicting Mori restaurant, Jim Kelly's bar and notable 1950s Broadway showfolk and politicians recalling seemingly happier, simpler times.

Empire Diner in Chelsea near 23rd Street used to stink of gentrification and yunnie putrefaction. But it's aged into a real beauty, a cornerstone of the neighborhood. Long may it sling hash.

Today, they started jackhammering the street at 7am. I got up.  Gotta slave at the computer all day. But my mind/body is floating over the Hudson....
