So much to study and search; and like oatmeal girl said - the contrast in building styles is fantastic - absolutely makes one wonder what we are thinking with the sterile glass and steel monstrosities we hoist upon our cityscapes. The beauty and interest of the older buildings is so much more appealing and comforting.
It gives a glimpse into the old days. A chance to let our imaginations view New York City 75 years ago or more. I have to agree with boromax--that big block is sterile. Useful, I'm sure, but a good architect could have made it useful and beautiful.
Yes, old vs. new is very clear here. I have nothing to add except the question, Does anyone think the new is as attractive? If not, why did it evolve . . . EVERYWHERE? Economics is my guess, but I've never heard an explanation.

Once those towers went in, there went the penthouse views for those in the brick building.
Doorman and unobstructed views of the East River...my father-in-law just sold his penthouse view from a brick building...
I think I prefer "the old version"
I like the way the bridge draws the eye away into the distance.
