New York's last "novelty" shop, Gordon Novelty C). (931-933 Broadway between 21st & 22nd Sts.)will soon be demolished. The City needs another nail salon, bank, drug store, etc. Say goodbye to "party hats, canes, masks, grab bags, noisemakers, dice, joke items, novelty hats, carnival items, bingo supplies, lanterns, Halloween items" and "premium goods," all under one roof.

PS THat blue is pretty fabulous
Demolished! What a great building. Love the color.
Bummer, there's no place like Gordon Novelty-that's for sure.
Time for catalogue shopping.
That's just sad. The color and just plain oldness of the building is great.
passing of an age...love that blue!

Love those nail salons! Maybe a tattoo parlor...
Thanks for stopping by! Hope all is well Ken Mac.
This city, like many others, continues to just fade before our eyes.
It has a neat facade, but I think it would need lots of effort to be restored.
Have a beautiful day there!

Seems like something A.J. Liebling would have written about for the New Yorker titled something like The Novelty King.
One really get the blues from this one.
What a shame! The building is fabulous despite itc condition!
What a neat place this must have been in its prime. You and I are taking a look at painted brick today.
Now there's a building full of stories. . .
Such a shame. Great shot though. That blue really draws you into the photo.
Our North American cities are never going to look like the beautiful old European ones - we keep tearing down everything! Great shot.
I'm really gonna miss this one.
What a tragedy. These places are great. Another slice of America is gone.
That sucks, thanks for preserving the memory with this great photo.
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that the building is BLUE.
Hey, I've recently happened onto some pics from Tucson, S. America, and Africa, where color seems to be almost revered. Why don't more buildings in U.S. cities do this? It's distinctive, it's cheerful, and you you know where you are. Go to the 3-story blue building and turn left.
What a shame it's a goner.
I love that color blue. That's a color that would make a store stand out from the crowd. Sometimes progress is not such a good thing.
Awww, that's sad. Novelty shops are so fun!
But, where is it? Is this 9th Ave?
You know, people go to Paris or Venice to see the old buildings and imagine what it must have been like there centuries ago.
To the Parisians/Venetians, their old buildings are slums and many would love to be living in a modern building.
Here, we abandon them, let them rot, tear them down, and build horrible boxes with a shelf life of only a generation or two.
Not sure who's right.
I am so disheartened that places like this disappear. I remember one such one in my hometown.
But your beautiful photo has captured its essence forever.
That sucks.. I hate to see old specialty shops go under and disappear.. It looks you'll have one of the last keepsakes...
The new buildings will never age, they'll just look old and unappealing. I'm glad you're documenting all of this, one day people will look at your work and be grateful.
Like that Dude.
Like that Dude.
Well, maybe there'll be a new Korean grocery. Never too many of these!!
Thanks for taking this photo!
And all in the name of progress. I love the shots . I just found the site today and love what I have seen so far. XXX Don

Hello!
I have finished the painting of this façade just now:

I hope you like it!
I took the original photo to make the oil painting in 2001.
