The High Line, the once abandoned elevated freight railway that winds its way from 14th street to 34th on the west side, has opened to the public. I have yet to visit, but will probably do so this week. Meanwhile, check my blog Walking the High Line, for a view from last year when I illegally crawled up on the glorious span.

Very interesting...what does that mean, "opened to the public"? Why would the public want to go up there?

In some parts of the country, they turn abandoned railways into bridle paths.
Love the High Line photos. Did they put in a bridle path in the new construction?

What a great photo, and I loved the rest of the link.
In the '70s I used to live in Soho and work in Midtown. I would bike to work on the old Westside elevated highway, that had closed due to poor repair. I don't quite remember how it ran or where I accessed it from, since everything is so changed there. this reminds me of that.
