JIM AND KARLA MURRAY STOREFRONT

Jim and Karla Murray are one my greatest inspirations. Their amazing book, STOREFRONT -- THE DISAPPEARING FACE OF NEW YORK, chronicles the human life, the history, the mom and pop businesses of the City that was New York. Photographed with great care, love and skill, their subjects depict a pre-Bloomberg, pre-gentrification era in New York that that I mourn almost daily. Like, for real. Check their wonderful blog and buy their book. http://urbanimagephotography.com/wordpress/

That's a great blog! It seems that the world is turning into a mall of chain stores and the quirky old places can no longer afford the rents or people get old and sell-up for mega bucks. Depressing.

This is soooooo neat and cool and groovy. We had one here but it closed this past winter. It was called Dingleberries.

that is a great blog.
& the loss of so many beautiful shops & buildings is something that I don't think I will ever fully understand.
-though I love that people like Jim & Karla document these places through photography.

When I grew up in Sheepshead Bay I used to shop all the time in Zig Zag. Now their sign is (temporally) on Court St.

that's a cool store. I've never seen it. Hm.
The mallness is terrible in the US. We're lucky in comparison to LA. I think it's all downhill from here, with the real estate prices.
