Louis Zuflacht Smart Clothes

I can find very little history on this old clothier at 154 Stanton except that his "garments can be tested before use," as mentioned in an ad for Hasidim in need of, well, garments. Located in the seriously gentrified Lower East Side, at least they held on to this magnificent sign.

I believe the ancestors of Louis Zuflacht now reside in San Antonio, Texas. I went to school with Harold Zuflacht, now a family law attorney, and his father, Dr. Michael Zuflacht, was raised in New York. His grandfather (or great grandfather) was a tailor in New York, or so Michael told me.

Thanks after sharing. Like at all times, on the money and bang on on quarry!

Louis Zuflacht was my great uncle. I bought my Bar Mitzvah suit there. Their success was due to the fact that they produced 'Kosher' clothes. I believe that they opened their business in 1909.

My father, his brother and many of my relatives bought suits and sport jackets at Zuflacht's. I got my first real suit there--a $150 Petrocelli. That was quite a lot of money in the 1960's. I remember Jack and Joe and a large poster of Caesar Romero above the cash register.

Used to live across the street at 153 Stanton St. In the late fifties and early sixties. I remember that the shop windows were covered with a yellow orange clear cellophane to protect the suits from sun. There were signs that said haberdashery and a's a kid I wondered what that meant. Just a note of interest a's a kid I remember the super giving a bunch of Stanton St kids, me and my brother included a nickel each to clean out the back yard at 154 and 156 Stanton St. The back yards were like stepping into another world at least to the beginning of the 20th century. There were al least 40 little doors splitting in half the back yard and behind each door was a little room filled with old furniture and suitcases. It was our job to empty each room of what was stored onside. I was like 7 years old and even them realized that it was like stepping onto a time capsule with alot of Hebrew books and newspapers clothing and wooden furniture. Another world of people long gone.

Louis Zuflacht was my grandfather...my mothers dad. He dies at 104 years old in 1986.
He and his sons, mu uncles Jack and Joe, ran the business with him for many many years.
When the busiess and the neighborhood went bad they left the building and retired in Florida.
Someone bought the building from the city and it changed hands twice more. Amazingly all the prior owners kept the sign which is really iconic and a work of art.
The current owner is a gem. She fully intends to maintain the image and sprit of the building. Has spent a small fortune renovating and preserving the infrastructure so that it could last many lifetimes. The building doubles as a studio, a residence, an art showcase, a public space for parties and events, a rehearsal area for local bands, a party spot etc...
None of the above could my grandfather or uncles have imagines...to them it was the "store" where they spent their lives working and caring deeply for their customers who stayed with them until the end...many for 30-50 yerars.
The current owner now knows the history, has pictures of my grandfather and uncles and can now put a face to the iconic name on the sign.
Thank god she has the keys...she is great!!!

I have an old wooden hanger from this store...perhaps at a previous address. It's labeled "Zuflacht's Clothes 158 Stanton St. New York", and "Dry Dock 3726 Clothier & Taylor"... not sure what that refers to.

My dad bought all of his suits there. I remember going down to the east side to the store with him. Thanks for the sign

Re: Glenn R. comment, I have an identical Zuflacht's hanger. From my dad, who spent time in NYC during WWII.

Crazy, I came across this blog. Heading down to the village tomorrow and was searching the street number on Stanton to check out the old store. Louis was my great-grandfather, Jack my great Uncle and Joe my grandfather. Boy the posts brought back so many great memories. Thanks for sharing them!

My Mother bought my Bar Mitzvah suit at Zuflacht's. I continued to buy my suits for many years thereafter. I still have a few of the wooden hangers he used with the logo still on it.
