Arch in the Park

Our beloved Washington Sq Park is undergoing major renovations. Locals complained that the overhaul was unnecessary, but one day the entire park was fenced off and that was that. The main goal is to align the Arch with the fountain. Why? No one knows. Back in the day, buses actually went through the arch, rounded the fountain, and rotated back up Fifth Avenue. Now when the locals really need the park, there is no way in. But signs of life are encouraging, new sidewalks have been laid, the trees are protected, and scheduled reopen is set for 2010. 2010! Check out the park as it was...

Ken, it finally updated! Woo hoo! Found it when I searched for New York (not Greenwich). =)

I like the park by the way. Someone in your city council must be a tad O.C. Don't worry, 2010 will be here soon enough, the way time flies so fast!

I also like how you've re-written some of the entries (esp. the meatpacking disco district). Now, everyone will just have to fall in love with your city too.

Welcome to the club Ken. I will visit often as I don't know that area of nyc very well. Bonne continuation (keep it up).

Twenty-ten seems forever to me. I will be 74 and two years might be too long to wait. LOL

I like your photography. I also like the idea of making the buses go through the arch and around the fountain and back out on the street again. That must have made sense at one time.

Hey there,
welcome to CDP. I'm quite a newbie myself :)
Glad there's another New York blog as I can't get enough of your city.
haven't spent heaps of time in greenwich village, though did see the work being done in washington sq. when i was there in jan this year (cold cold cold!).
all i remember were excavated sites and piles of soil - nice to see some progress! :)

The bus going through the arch did it for me. Would've loved to have seen that. You have some different kind of shots on here of a part you don'r often see. Welcome by the way.

Your blog has been included in our guide.

Around The World with Daily Photoblogs Old and New is a brief history of the City Daily Photoblog movement and a guide to sites around the world.

Although originally arising from the CDPB lists this is an independent publication. Inclusion here does not imply that a blog is officially a CDPB. Our criteria are that photographs mainly from a specific geographical location (not necessarily a "city" but usually more specific than a whole country or region) are posted at dated intervals (not necessarily daily), and archives are searchable by date.

Please keep us informed of any changes to your details.

Takes real genius to get rid of money that way. And the park only needs to be closed for two years!! Brilliant.

BTW your blog is terrific.
