Can't quite fathom that the World Trade Center towers only existed in the window of time between these two photos. A fact somehow related to the rooftop suicide fence installed on the left building in photo #2.
I was going to comment on the cobblestones, and actually the city is supposed to restore all cobblestones in historic areas. They are working on Jane St right now, and in Tribeca. There is a NYT article on it this week. So, you never know. I'd LOVE to see Christopher St in Belgium Blocks!
I like the ONE WAY sign from 1970. What's with the current do not enter signs? And what's with the electronic red palm sign? Makes one wonder how the locals in 1970 knew when to cross the street.
A few months ago I was contacted by one of the people (apparently) in that photo I took in 1970. She had discovered my photo on the web somehow, and contacted some of the other people in the photo. They were all friends (I'm not sure which of the people on the corner they are) going somewhere together. This photo, and Facebook, brought them all back together again after 40 years!
The interesting thing is how random that all is. I took two pictures from that spot. Snap, Snap! The first one was 90 degrees to my left, down 10th street. And then walked away.
Amazing - just about everything has changed except Village Cigars.

ReplyDeleteI grew up in the Village, and don't live there any more. I makes me bad to see that the cobbles stones are gone, and even the curb is different.
