I suppose this loosely comes under the category of graffitti, but it's really quite lovely don't you think? Eliane correctly called it a mural, it sits on a wall in the the West Village's ever gentrifying meatpacking district.
This is a pretty cool picture, both the artwork and youe snapshot of it are quite nice.
Scrolling down your pages brought back a feeling of nostolgia. Too damn bad about Tin Pan Alley. After the gentrification of Hell's Kitchen I knew that no place in the city would be safe from developes.
I would say it's more of a mural than a graffiti. I saw it in your Flickr stream: it really pops! The sepia colors of the evening really enhance it. Nice!!!
Although I do in general not agree at all with graffitti on walls of buildings, I must admit that some of them are very cleaverly done, like this one!!
Yes, very striking but I'm very curious if it's part of a larger graffiti/mural movement. Here in LA, there are over-sized posters with a pattern almost identical to what's in the lower left and right hand corners. In February I posted a picture of a truck with this motif pasted on it's side.
Ken, I just read your message on the J-Weed. I posted the photo on February 17, 2008 of my blog. I believe Andre the Giant (not real familiar with him)is also on the truck as well. -Kevin-
Surprised! Just the moment I had seen it in first photo, I couldn't see It was painted on the wall.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely.
Thanks for dropping by my blog.
Sorry, I mistook. It's a "fish BAIT" vending machine. They sell a kind of lugworm as live bait.

Sure, a very beautiful picture! I like the color too!
ReplyDeleteHell yes, it's beautiful! I think if this was the pure definition of graffiti, no one but a heretic would complain.
ReplyDeletethat is one good-looking graffiti. wish to see more.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Hard to believe it's just a graffiti...
ReplyDeleteThe Meatpacking District has some of the best murals/grafittis in the city. I have taken some great ones there.
ReplyDeleteI took some similar shots back in March. I love that block: http://theworldsamess.blogspot.com/2008/03/daily-travels-more-gansevoort-street.html
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Wow! I have to go & check this out in person. I am curious to know what time of day this was taken?
ReplyDeleteI went by it and have a black and white picture of it, but those orange tones you got are a great PLUS!!
ReplyDeleteWell it's gorgous, whatever you'd like to call it. The patterns are fantastic. And the light you shot it in is beautiful too!

ReplyDeletenow that is an interesting thought. IF you look closely at center of her apron, or whatever, you can see the face of Igor the Giant. !!
