Lower East Side relics

Excellent report on saving New York's industrial past....

As the LES is plowed under for shiny happy condoland, old businesses, residences and traditions disappear. I enjoy their old world charm, hope you do too...

I have no doubt the dinette once offered a plate of put out the lights and cry that one would smother with mike and ike or the twins. With a cup of joe to wash it down.

Of course we do! Why do you think we come here? :-)

It's a shame those old businesses are disappearing! The same happens everywhere around here... I really like the signs and colours from the old days.

The signs, colors, charm and old-style designs will be missed....one reason why I love your blog so much is that I can always find these wonderful old buildings to look at for a while. It is a shame and very sad that someday these will be no more.

Condoland sucks! Old buildings rule!

Oh this made me sad today. A lot of our downtown area looks shabby too. Days gone by. Guess I'm waxing nostalgic because it's my birthday and I am turning 105!

Thanks for recognizing Katz's Furniture (which is right near the other more famous Katz's), which is a business that has been in my family for over a century on the LES. Unlike Gertel's, the business is still going strong.

I like those old businesses and residences, they are nice!

I love so much the brownstone's architecture. In Greenwich Village we see those buildings?

I sure do too. But we can't really keep the entire city in formalin to preserve them, can we? New exciting things have to happen too. C'est la vie. Maybe you could score one of those fab signs to decorate your apartment? How über cool would that be?

I am still waiting for my special post on Yonah Schimmel's Knishes Bakery. :)

Excellent job capturing some of the few spots of the LES that haven't been hipsterized. Makes me want to go take a picture of the sign at Sammy's Roumanian before its gone. And I'm now wondering what sign they have at Gus's Pickles.

It's almost hard to believe that one story buildings still exist in New York. They should preserve Gertles Bakery as an example of what one looked like.
