Crumbling Hudson pier

The City fills practically every empty/available space with something new, but this old pier, and its tie-ons and stanchions, remains.

I love how you see things! A pier covered with bollards to the point of over-crowding is not something I'l think of to photograph. Thanks for expanding my horizons!

I particularly like rounded concrete piece, which probably adorned some massive building or led you into the terminal. This was shot last summer, I am sure it's gone now.

I sure hope it's not in use anymore.

Does anyone see the beauty and historical value in these old maritime items? The millions of lives that have passed next to these "bollards"? Or does only the new and clean make people comfortable? Eventually the entire world will be a big shiny shopping mall and people will wonder what happened to our cities.

I am thinking they may use them to beautify the park. They did that in Red Hook (says this Ikea customer). They played with the industrial history of the site and displayed all those items quite nicely, each time with a little explanation on a label. Those things that looks like giant stamps*, they painted them in bright yellow. Those are nice piece of history.

*No idea what the English word is. :(

This makes me ask, how is NYC doing these days? Is it like other large cities where the new, younger wave of creatives feel a need to 'improve' her face or is NYC honoring the old and protecting her history? You have a wonderful eye and perspective!
I love drawing pieces and parts of a whole, disecting it so to speak for details, and really appreciate your finding much more than concrete in your photo. You 'see' the history and the concrete's relationship to human life. Love thinking about the lives of those who passed by such a pier. Betty.

Sometimes people think these images are ugly, so I think this is a great work because it represents the real life and other places which deserve to be taken into account.m10m
