Wicked Big City Woman

Vinyl is alive and well in the big city, thanks to second hand LP dealers like Academy, A1, and Big City Records. Located at 521 East 12th this tiny store has the serious goods. The walls are lined with old school LP goodness, mostly for the DJ crowd, but fans of Euro jazz, classic hip-hop, Brazilian, Latin percussion masters and the occasional super soul sister will have a high time here. Enjoy this video of German songstress Katja Ebstein, live from 1970...complete with faux Tudor backdrop, singing Swedes, and swilling senior citizens...

I love those go-go boots.

I sold all my vinly back in 1985 to a place like that.

There are certain places in Philadelphia where you hear about robberies at gun point at 11am and I'm sure lots of places in Harlem and the Bronx are way too risky. I'm thinking about scouting around Temple university for places to take pictures.

James--you need to know how to handle yourself in the ghetto--you can't take photos just so..You could get damaged and your camera destroyed. I usually ask if I can photograph certain things..it is an adventure.

It's kind of like the golden age of music.

ToonMan just bought a 'machine' and program to convert his vinyl to MP3 files (is that right, are they called MP3?) ... its comforting to know vinyl is alive and well

But does anyone have anything to play the vinyl on?

Back in the 70s, for several years, I reviewed records for a local newspaper...got all the latest LPs for free...

Had thousands. Almost all gone now. But it was great fun while it lasted.

Still have an LP player hooked up and ready to go, though.

LOVE the album covers on the walls. What a cool idea. I have a box full of LP's in the basement warping I'm sure. I can't bring myself to throw them away. And KM, I know I'm O.L.D., but in my opinion, Hip Hop ain't classic.
